LAW T 506 Tax Practice And Skills

Credits: 1-4, Max 4

Students are trained in IRS VITA tax preparation during the autumn quarter, with a focus on rural Native Alaskan tax-specific issues surrounding business, fishing, dividends, Native Village Council, and Native Corporation activities. During Presidents' Day week in winter quarter, about 20 students travel to Anchorage for further training, then to rural villages to assist Native Alaskans with current tax year preparation, provide tax education, and assist with and prevent future tax controversies. The course, led by Professor Ramon Ortiz-Velez in partnership with the Alaska Business Development Center (ABDC), requires an application and participation in both quarters.
