LAW E 514 The Law Of Nonprofit Organizations

Credits: 2-4, Max 4

This course examines the body of law generally applicable to nonprofit corporations, beginning with the mechanics of formation and the ongoing obligations of oversight and reporting that accompany corporate existence. We will consider the constraints that federal and state law place on lobbying and political campaign activity, and the circumstances under which advocacy jeopardizes an organization's exempt status. The class will cover the prohibitions on private benefit and inurement. The course will also address the commercial activities increasingly undertaken by nonprofits and the governance questions such ventures raise.
