Designed to take advantage of special opportunities resulting from visitors to the School of Law or other exceptional occurrences. (This is not a form of independent study.)
The Law of People and Place (SUM 2025)
This place-based learning experience focuses on a particular ecosystem or river system and the myriad natural resource, environmental, governmental, legal, policy, and practical issues embedded in that region. We approach these issues by immersing ourselves in the place and working to understand the ways in which law and policy interact with it. Aside from the course faculty, students will hear from tribal representatives, private conservationists, federal land managers, and other stakeholders involved in management of various places. Themes explored include the myth and reality of public lands; wildlife management across jurisdictions; water law; cooperative management; and the intersection of tribal rights, sovereignty, and interests with federal, state, and private interests—both historical and continuing. More information is available through our partner, The Freeflow Institute. Locations visited and studied include: Upper Missouri Breaks National Monument, Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, and the Crown of the Continent, including Glacier National Park. [Note: For Summer 2025, we are planning to visit the Salmon/Lochsa Rivers region of Idaho, with more details forthcoming].

Risk and Compliance Seminar
This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of corporate risk and compliance. It will focus on the governance, processes, and internal controls that permit an organization to both manage and optimize risk. It will answer: What constitutes an effective compliance program? What is a risk-based approach to risk management? While practical examples will come from the healthcare industry due to my experience at Mayo Clinic and now Amazon Health Services, the class applies to all industries.
