WIN 2022 - Low Bono Legal Research

This course is designed to give students an opportunity to further develop their research skills through exploration of free and low-cost legal research tools. The primary jurisdictional focus will be Washington State, but we will include some federal resources as well. The ultimate goal of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the types of resources that are freely available and how best to leverage them to conduct legal research. Topics include ethical imperative of effective, efficient legal research; evaluating sources online; utilizing free secondary sources; finding and validating primary law; researching businesses and people; current awareness; and competitive intelligence. By the end of the course, students should be able to:

• Understand the ethical requirements for competent legal research;
• Implement an effective research strategy;
• Proficiently use free and low-cost online research and information services;
• Identify types of free or low-cost secondary sources and know when they are appropriate to use;
• Find relevant statutes, case law and regulatory materials using free or low-cost resources;
• Understand the importance of validating and updating your research and how to do so in a cost-effective manner;
• Execute advanced search techniques for more effective, relevant search results.

As an advanced law school course, it is assumed students possess basic knowledge of the legal system, sources of law, and Bluebook citation format.
