LAW A 547 Critical Perspectives on Law Seminar

Credits: 2-4

This seminar considers efforts to understand law and legal institutions from the point of view of Continental philosophy and critical social theory. The first quarter will involve a close reading and intensive discussion of texts in the critical traditions of thinking about law, including the work of such thinkers as Marx, Gramsci, Adorno, Marcuse, Weber, Durkheim, Schmitt, Benjamin, Foucault, Heidegger, Levinas, Derrida, and Agamben. In the second quarter students will present their own works in progress concerning themes raised by the readings, with a view to completing a significant research paper of publishable quality. Enrollment in this seminar will be limited to 12 students.
