The course will cover the fundamental principles and doctrines of U.S. copyright law, focusing on the structure and interpretation of the Copyright Act of 1976, as amended. Coverage includes selected related contemporary issues under domestic law (such as privacy, free speech, and antitrust), and the impact of international conventions and trade agreements on U.S. practice. The role of culture, technology, and economics in influencing recent legislation and industry practices is examined. A significant percentage of class work will be devoted to analysis and discussion of problems drawn from contemporary copyright disputes. Not open to students who have taken A526 Copyrights and Trademarks.
