Child Advocacy Clinic

Clinical training in family and juvenile law under the supervision of a member of the Law School faculty. Students will participate in a carefully supervised experience in which students represent indigent persons in family court (dissolution and paternity practice primarily) and juvenile court (dependency cases and parental rights terminations). Students will interview clients and witnesses. Students will draft legal documents, gather facts informally or through legal discovery. Students will negotiate cases, counsel clients, and conduct hearings and trials. Clients will generally be referred from the Columbia Legal Services, the King County Bar Association, Marshall Alternative High School, and Juvenile Court. Rule 9-eligible students only. Credit/No credit only. Law A579 Child Advocacy is a co- or pre-requisite for Child Advocacy Clinic I and II. It is strongly recommended that students take the following courses before enrolling in the clinic or that students be concurrently enrolled: B520 Trial Advocacy, A580 Family Law, B503 Evidence, B510 Professional Responsibility, B517 Juvenile Justice, and B533 Interviewing and Counseling for Lawyers. Enrollment priorities for clinics apply.
