LAW E 503 Analytic Writing

Credits: 3

The course has two parts. The first half will provide an introduction to legal scholarship by examining the structure and content of a variety of outstanding articles, essays, notes and comments. The readings will illustrate different types of scholarship, ranging from descriptive to critical and normative writings. Students will be encouraged to observe the form and technique of each type and to consider the audience for and the role that each type plays in the legal community. The second half of the course is designed to help students identify a topic about which they would like to write and select a form, technique and audience appropriate to that topic and the students' level of expertise. This class does not satisfy the advanced writing requirement.
