LAW P 541
Copyright Case Study: The Wizard of Oz
Credits:
1-2
This course examines The Wonderful Wizard of Oz from its 1900 publication to its various adaptations, from the 1939 motion picture to The Wiz to Wicked. Students will examine how derivative rights, licensing, fair use, and the public domain play key roles in bringing creative works to the public.
In this course, we will bring these legal concepts to life by doing a deep dive into the creative works themselves, carefully reading or viewing them alongside their creative and legal histories to see how copyright doctrine shaped the creative limitations on the various adaptations.
All students who register for this course must be available to attend The Wiz in downtown Seattle on the evening of Wednesday, February 11, 2026 (admission will be paid for; students must arrange their own transportation).
Prerequisite: LAW P507 or instructor permission.
