Ninth Circuit Judge Susan Graber Visits UW Law School
The Hon. Susan P. Graber, Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, will visit the University of Washington School of Law on Monday, March 4. Judge Graber has generously agreed to participate in several student events that day sponsored by Moot Court Honor Board. Dean Testy is pleased to welcome this distinguished jurist. She encourages students and friends of the law school to participate in the events surrounding Judge Graber’s visit.
Judge Graber will speak at an Appellate Advocacy Panel Discussion in Room 133 at 1:30 p.m., along with UW’s Prof. Eric Schnapper, the Betts, Patterson & Mines Professor of Trial Advocacy. Judge Graber will provide insight into the appellate judge’s role, and Prof. Schnapper will offer the viewpoint of an appellate practitioner. In his career, Prof. Schnapper has handled over eighty cases before the United States Supreme Court, arguing many himself. The experience and expertise brought to the panel by Judge Graber and Prof. Schnapper will be a great benefit to students. The panel will take questions.
Judge Graber will also preside over the Judson Falknor Appellate Advocacy Competition Championship at 6:00 p.m. in Room 133. The championship panel will feature five distinguished federal and state judges:
Hon. Susan P. Graber, Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Hon. William A. Fletcher, Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Hon. Ricardo S. Martinez, District Judge, United States District Court for the Western District of Washington
Hon. Charles W. Johnson, Associate Chief Justice, Washington Supreme Court
Hon. Debra L. Stephens, Justice, Washington Supreme Court
Judge Graber was appointed to the Ninth Circuit by President Clinton on July 30, 1997, and confirmed by the United States Senate on March 17, 1998. Prior to her appointment to the federal bench, Judge Graber served as an Associate Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court from 1990–98, having been elevated from the Oregon Court of Appeals. Judge Graber received her B.A. from Wellesley College (Phi Beta Kappa) and her J.D. from Yale Law School.
