Esther Park is a Part-Time Lecturer and Director of the Externship Program.
Prior to joining UW Law, Esther was a legal services attorney and enjoyed supervising law student externs in her practice. She spent two years in New York City at the Brooklyn Family Defense Project, representing parents involved in the child welfare system. Before that, she was Director of Legal Services at Seattle's Union Gospel Mission (now Open Door Legal Services). Esther's private sector experience includes working as an associate and contract attorney at Ellis, Li & McKinstry PLLC, litigating both civil and criminal matters, and clerking in the Starbucks Legal Department during her 2L year. In a previous career, Esther was a practicing pharmacist, licensed in Washington and Massachusetts.
As Director of UW Law's Externship Program, Esther is the primary faculty supervisor for students who take an externship course, which allows students to experience learning the law in a practice setting. In this capacity, she works with students to establish appropriate goals for their externships and provides opportunities for students to reflect on their experiences. She is also responsible for communicating with field supervisors and conducting on-site visits of field placements. Additionally, Esther manages the Judicial Clerkship Program with faculty directors Tom Cobb and Sarah Kaltsounis.
Esther currently serves on the Washington State Bar Association's Pro Bono and Legal Aid Committee and its Continuing Legal Education Committee. She is a member of the Oversight Committee for Open Door Legal Services, and she volunteers on King County Superior Court's Ex-Parte/Probate Department Review Calendar.
