HR Coordinator, Dean Speer has been at the Law School since 1989, working first in Development and Alumni Relations, then in Special Project & Programs, followed by Academic Services, and subsequently in the Dean's Office before HR.
He first began deploying his talents on campus in June of 1984 and has been lurking around the quad and environs for nearly as long as he and anyone can remember. Dean's tasks have included nearly everything that's related to running the Law School, except teaching! He provides "general" and confidential administrative support for the areas of personnel, reception and switchboard, clerical, secretarial, and events.
Dean was the volunteer Chair of the UW's Combined Fund Drive from 2003 through 2005. Appointed by the Governor, he served two three-year terms on the board of the State of Washington Combined Fund Drive -- which as of July 2010 is under the purview of the Office of the Secretary of State, Kim Wyman.
Mr. Speer holds a B.F.A. degree from Cornish College of the Arts, is member of the first graduating class of the Development Management Experience (State of Washington, Olympia), and was trained as a dancer here, there, and everywhere. Dean can be seeing dancing at the law school here: Legal Legs.
When not on campus, he can be espied dancing around, flattening classical music lovers with his awesome baritone voice, eating gourmet goodies, rubbing the tummy of his cat, or even parasailing (he's got the pictures to prove it, too!). He also knows all 100 elephant jokes -- ask him the one about General Charles de Gaulle. Personally, he has good eye/hand coordination and reasonably strong teeth.
Dean is the author of the 2010 title: ON TECHNIQUE, University Press of Florida . His second book, All Steps Considered is published by University Book Store Press, 2015.
Mr. Speer provides support to Human Resources.
