Information for LL.M. students

Job searching for LL.M. students is significantly different compared to J.D. students. LL.M.s are often considered lateral hires for firms, regardless of their experience level. LL.M.s from countries other than the United States are limited to taking the bar exam in New York and California and this impacts their opportunities in Seattle.

Before Starting Classes

LL.M. students from countries other than the United States will want to reformat their resumes to match current U.S. styles, as explained in this tip sheet. Examples of resumes are located in the application materials section on our Finding a Job  page. Make an appointment with a CPLD coach to review your resume.

  • If you are participating in the Fall Recruiting Program, check the website frequently for schedule changes and last minute additions.
  • Schedule a mock Interview with your career coach.

Throughout the Year

  • Treat job searching like a class – devote a few hours every week to finding a job by researching employers of interest to you, reviewing postings and most importantly, networking. LL.M.s have an advantage in that their practice area focus is clear. This can be more challenging if you are trying to connect with attorneys in New York and California, but talk with your coach and make a strategy for success.
  • Pay attention to the Government Honors deadlines emails from Lawnews. If they apply to your program, you will be notified of government opportunities as they arise.
  • For help with curricular practical training or optional practical training paperwork, see Dean Mary Hotchkiss.
  • For LL.M.s with additional work experience, look for postings on other online sources such as www.indeed.com and the Washington State Bar Association website.
