• Rosenthal Fellowship Announces 2013 Fellowship Class, Including Wes Kovarik '14 - Latin American Herald Tribune Wes is a concurrent J.D. and M.A. student at the University of Washington School of Law and Jackson School of International Studies. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego in International Studies, with a minor in European History. His focus is on international and comparative law, international security, arms control, and U.S. foreign policy. (4/11/13)

• UW law students travel to London to argue licensing terms for standard essential patents before highly regarded international intellectual property judges The Hon. Chief Judge Randall Rader, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit presided over a U.S. trial, Dr. Klaus Grabinski, Federal Supreme Court of Germany over a German trial, and the Honourable Mr. Justice Arnold, High Court of England and Wales over a UK trial. The Judges were then joined by Dr. Gabriella Muscolo, Rome IP Court and Lord Hoffmann, Honorary Professor, Queen Mary University of London for an international appeal.  James Barker '14 who argued before the appeals court said, “All of the people were incredible - Judges, Faculty and Classmates. We got to argue a mock trial directly to the top IP judges in the world! I never expected that I'd get to do that as a student.”
   
  The mock trials were a highlight for the students and their European partner school colleagues after a week of comparative law lectures and a license negotiation.  Janice Goh '13 who argued against James said, "I can't think of a better way to learn international and comparative IP law than to be surrounded by faculty, students, attorneys, and judges from different countries. The curriculum allowed us to contextualize theory with practice through our participation in contract negotiation, mock trial, and appellate advocacy. Not to mention, I made a lot of good friends through the program."

  Shon Hopwood knows what it’s like to get a second chance. A bank robber sentenced to federal prison, Hopwood later gave his life to Christ and embarked on a new future. Today, he’s a husband, father and law school student.

• Jane Schroeder, Priya Rai and Kimberly Schertz, all Class of 2015, win victory in the Washington State House of Representatives UW Legislative Advocacy Clinic had a huge victory in the Washington State House of Representatives. ESHB 1651, The Youth Opportunities Act concerning access to juvenile records, drafted and lobbied by our clinic students passed unanimously. After Republicans removed a half-dozen offenses from the bill, it was passed unanimously 97-0, with Republican Jason Overstreet and Democrat Ruth Kagi speaking strongly in favor. (3/12/13)
• The Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts is pleased to announce Evan Brown '14 as its 2013–2014 Editor-in-Chief Brown grew up in Silicon Valley, and came to Seattle by way of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. He worked for several years as an editor in the Geography and Cultural Studies group at ABC-CLIO, an academic and educational publishing company. Evan intends to pursue art and entertainment law, and he was attracted to UW in part by the Law, Technology & Arts program and journal. His studies have thus far focused on copyright, trademark, and business law, and he has served as the President of the Advocates for the Arts and Vice President of the TechLaw society. He is excited to work with next year’s editorial board to produce an intellectually stimulating and helpful resource for practitioners dealing with issues at the intersection of the arts and technology.

• 2Ls Andrew Morgan, Emily Nelson, and Abigail Pearl will travel to Bogotá, Colombia to compete in the Third Annual Inter-American Sustainable Development Law Moot Court Competition The students are the first team from UW Law to participate in the competition, which will take place March 6-9, 2013 at the campus of Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, and will feature teams from around the world competing in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
  
  Teams will conduct a mock trial before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights addressing issues of indigenous rights, international patent law, human rights, and environmental law. The competition is co-hosted by the Public Interest Law Group at the Law School of Universidad de Los Andes; the Law and Environment Program at the Getulio Vargas Foundation Law School; and Tulane University Law School’s Payson Center for International Development.

• The Innocence Project Tries Again with Wrongly Convicted Compensation Bill - Seattle Weekly Thwarted during the last two legislative sessions in an ongoing attempt to push a bill through that provides financial compensation for the wrongly convicted, the Innocence Project - with help from its local, University of Washington-affiliated chapter and sponsor Rep. Tina Orwall (D - Des Moines) - have gotten back on the horse, championing HB 1341. If passed the legislation would require the state to dole out payments to those who were unjustly convicted of a crime they didn't commit. Caroline Bercier, a 3L the IPNW Legislative Advocacy Clinic is quoted in the article. • UW Law students win regional BLSA moot court and mock trial tournaments The Black Law Student Association hosted its regional moot court and mock trial tournaments Jan. 9 - 12  UW law students won both tournaments. The champion teams included 1Ls.  It is rare for 1Ls to participate in national tournaments, and even rarer for them to win. Congratulations to the teams!  (1/22/13)

• IPNW Supervising Attorney Anna Tolin and law students Alice Jones and Brian Ferrasci-O’Malley secure new trial for Jeramie Davis, based on newly discovered DNA evidence - The Spokesman Deputy Spokane County Prosecutor Dale Nagy told a jury in 2008 to disregard the fact that Davis’ DNA did not match that found on the baseball bat used to kill Allen. A retest of that evidence in 2011 came back as a match to Julio J. Davila, who was convicted earlier this year of the crime. (9/20/12)

• From prison to law school with Shon Hopwood - KUOW Shon Hopwood committed five robberies in rural Nebraska in the late 1990s. He spent 13 years in prison, spending most of his time in the law library learning to write briefs for other prisoners. He wrote his first petition for certiorari — a request that the Supreme Court hear a case — for an inmate on a prison typewriter. (8/31/12)

• UW Law’s Immigration Law Clinic defends client from deportation to Vietnam Among the Immigration Law Clinic's victories this school year, Ben Harris ’12 and MariRuth Petzing ’13 successfully defended 30-year-old Khuong Ta against deportation. • UW team wins at the University of San Diego’s Thorsnes Vis Commercial Arbitration Pre-Moot UW law 2Ls Brie Coyle and Andy Murphy and UW law 3L Erin Pettigrew competed in the Thorsnes Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot at the University of San Diego, Feb. 18-19. The team made it into the finals, with Coyle and Murphy taking first place in the competition, as well as 2 of the 3 speaker awards. (3/1/12)

• UW Law team wins Western Regional Transactional Law Meet UW law 3Ls Julia Conway and Matthew Viers earned first place overall and "best draft" awards at the 2012 Western Regional Transactional LawMeet at UCLA School of Law, February 17. The awards were based on the UW team's representation of a hypothetical client in negotiations against teams representing the counterparty. (2/24/12)
• 3L Jeff Barnum's article cited by U.S. Court of Appeals Tenth Circuit In United States v. Strandlof, the Tenth Circuit upheld the Stolen Valor Act, which criminalizes lying about receiving a military award. • Tribal Court Public Defense Clinic visits Navajo Nation Professor Molly Cohan led a team of students from the Tribal Court Public Defense Clinic along with Afghan Visiting Scholars to the Navajo Nation to learn about Navajo efforts to create a justice system which supports the core cultural values of the Navajo people while operating effectively in the modern era. They observed the Navajo Supreme Court, met with the Navajo Peacemakers Program and ended the trip with a two day immersion in Canyon de Chelly. (6/1/11)
