UW Law Ranked 20th among Top Law Schools in the Country

The University of Washington School of Law jumped from its ranking of 30 to 20 among the top law schools throughout the U.S. according to the 2013 edition of Best Graduate Schools by U.S. News Media Group (U.S. News & World Report). This means a move of 14 spaces in only two years. The law school also notes its ranking as 7th in public law schools. More>>

Alumni Awards Dinner to Recognize Buehler ’07, Bendich ’75 and Lasnik ’78

On May 8, 2012, the Law School Alumni Association (LSAA) presents the 2012 Alumni Recognition Banquet at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Seattle. At the dinner, LSAA will honor Dustin Buehler ’07 -- Recent Graduate Award, Judy Bendich ’75 – Service Recognition Award, and The Honorable Robert Lasnik ’78 – Distinguished Alumni Award.

The Honorable William A. Fletcher Visits UW Law as Shefelman Jurist-in-Residence

William Fletcher During his three-day event-packed visit, Judge Fletcher was the honored speaker at the Order of the Coif, served as guest lecturer in Professor Porter’s Civil Procedure II class, and engaged in a lunchtime Q&A with students on topics ranging from Indian law to gay rights. Judge Fletcher also presided over the final round of the Falknor Moot Court Competition, joined by Judge Betty Fletcher '56 of the Ninth Circuit, Judge Richard Tallman of the Ninth Circuit, Chief Justice Barbara Madsen of the Washington State Supreme Court, Judge Michael Spearman of the Washington Court of Appeals, and Judge Mary Yu of the King County Superior Court. Judge Fletcher ended his visit with a keynote luncheon address to alumni and the legal community on the death penalty.

The event will honor Governor Christine Gregoire; Paula Littlewood '97, Executive Director of the Washington State Bar Association and Pac Rim Editor-in-Chief 1997-1998; Keith Hand '00, Associate Professor of Law at University California Hastings College of the Law and Pac Rim Editor-in-Chief 1999-2000; and Lawrence Weiner '92, Principle of LexiForum and Pac Rim’s Founding Editor-in-Chief.

Professor Steve Calandrillo Presenting at Two Conferences

Steve CalandrilloSteve Calandrillo will present his latest paper at the 7th Annual Contract Law Conference in San Diego, CA, and the American Law & Economics Association Annual Conference to be held at Stanford Law School. The paper, co-authored with UW alumnus Dustin Buehler '07, is entitled “Putting Humpty Dumpty Back Together Again: An Economic Analysis of the Eggshell Plaintiff Rule”.

Dean Kellye Testy Receives Alumni Award

Dean Kellye TestyDean Testy was awarded the Indiana University Maurer School of Law Distinguished Service Award. The award recognizes graduates of Indiana Law who have served their communities and the school in ways far exceeding traditional business, professional, and civic duties.

Noteworthy:

Bob AndersonBob Anderson was selected by the ALI to attend the March 29 meeting in Washington, D.C. on Indian country criminal law and jurisdiction, tribal government authority and jurisdiction, tribal-state relations, and the federal-tribal trust relationship.


Jackie McMurtrie

Jackie McMurtrie published Criminal Justice System’s Disparate Treatment of Individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in Cases Involving Sexual Activity, 39 J. psychiatry & l. 159-77 (2011).

 

Bill Bailey’s book Show the Story: The Power of Visual Advocacy will be featured in the spring issue of Voir Dire, the national magazine of the American Board of Trial Advocates.

Luna ’97 Presented MCHB 2012 Alumnus of the Year Award

Felix Gavi LunaFelix Gavi Luna was unanimously selected as the recipient of Moot Court Honor Board’s 2012 Alumni of the Year Award. Luna is known throughout the legal community as a superior trial advocate and has balanced his dedication to clients with a commitment to UW School of Law.

AJ Rei-Perrine '04 Wins at Sundance

AJ Rei-PerrineAfter graduating from law school AJ Rei-Perrine joined the U.S. Foreign Service. After 6 years as a diplomat in Kosovo and Argentina, she became a filmmaker. Rei-Perrine was Associate Producer for a short film shot in Kosovo titled The Return (Kthimi). The film, about a man who returns from a Serb prison to his wife and son, took the Jury Prize in Short Film, International Fiction at the Sundance International Film Festival.

Kieran Curley '01 New Miller Nash Managing Partner

curley Kieran Curley assumed the role of managing partner at Miller Nash. Curley is the youngest Managing Partner that the firm has ever appointed. He will be responsible for strategic implementation as well as the internal management of the firm.

Sutton '03 and Curtis '06 Open New Law Firm

Aimee Sutton and Erin CurtisAimee Sutton and Erin Curtis open criminal defense firm, Sutton & Curtis, PLLC. Sutton and Curtis developed their expertise in that area as a result of dealing with all types of criminal cases during their many years as public defenders.

UW Law teams find success at national competitions:

  • First place at the University of San Diego’s Thorsnes Vis Commercial Arbitration Pre-Moot  

    Premoot competition
    UW Law 2Ls Brie Coyle and Andy Murphy and 3L Erin Pettigrew competed in the Thorsnes Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot at the University of San Diego, Feb. 18-19. The team made it into the finals, with Coyle and Murphy taking first place in the competition, as well as 2 of the 3 speaker awards.

  • 3Ls wins Western Regional Transactional Law Meet  

    Transactional competitionJulia Conway
    and Matthew Viers earned first place overall and "best draft" awards at the 2012 Western Regional Transactional LawMeet at UCLA School of Law, February 17. The awards were based on the UW team's representation of a hypothetical client in negotiations against teams representing the counterparty. Ten teams, from nine law schools, competed in the Regional Meet.

  • Success at the Sports Law Competition

    Sportslaw competitionUW Law 2Ls Nate Bingham, Ashley Sherwood and Mark Tyson competed in the "Mardi Gras Invitational National Sports Law Competition" sponsored by Tulane University over Presidents' Day weekend. The competition featured a problem relating to the recent NBA lockout. The team reached the quarterfinals, finishing in the top 8 out of 32 national teams.

Race Judicata 5K to take place on April 14, 2012

Race Judicata on April 14

All are invited to participate in PILA's annual race, to be held in Seward Park. Registration is $30 online, or $35 the day of the race. The race benefits health-law specific public interest work through the UW Public Interest Law Association's Summer Grant Program. Dogs are welcome too.
