U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit; Professor Emeritus Yale Kamisar, University
of Michigan School of Law; John Kroger, Oregon Attorney General; and commentary
by Todd Maybrown, Partner, Allen, Hansen & Maybrown, PS.

Professor Ron Whitener named Champion of Change
Whitener
was selected as a White House Champion of Change. The award features lawyers “who
dedicate their professional lives to closing the justice gap in America” and
is given to a small group of people who are “Winning the Future.”
This honor will be presented to Whitener at the White House on October 13, 2011.
Professor Joel Ngugi appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Kenya
Ngugi will take a leave of absence from the law school to accept the appointment.
He plans to continue his involvement with UW by providing externship, independent
studies, and international legal research opportunities for students who are interested
in international, comparative and human rights law.

O’Connor, Professor of Law and Faculty Director of the Law,
Business & Entrepreneurship Program, is publisher of the
new blog that discusses law, creativity, commerce & entrepreneurship.
UW Law and the Seattle law firm of Graham & Dunn are co-sponsors.
Professor Watts will moderate fireside chat with Justice John Paul
Stevens
At the American College of Trial Lawyers annual conference in La Quinta, California
on Oct. 21, Associate Dean
Watts, along with Professor Lawrence Rosenthal of Chapman
University School of Law, will moderate a “fireside chat” with Justice
John Paul Stevens, who retired from the U.S. Supreme Court in 2010 after sitting
on the Court for more than thirty years.
UW Law announces new Legal Studies Research Paper Series
Through the Social Science Research Network (SSRN), the law school launched a new
ejournal containing our faculty's legal and interdisciplinary scholarship in all
subject areas.

Immigration Law Clinic earns huge win for former Sudanese child soldier
Teymur Askerov '12 and Melanie Beckwith '11, two
immigration law clinic students, and advanced clinic student Meghan Kelly '11
successfully defended a 33-year-old detained man from being sent back to Sudan,
where he feared he would be tortured. Athian Bol tells an amazing story and
Signe Dortch and her team focused attention on the widespread and egregious
human rights violations occurring in Sudan.
Five students awarded Federal Appellate Clerkships
Third year law students Hilary Hammell, Aurora Janke,
Katherine Kirklin O’Brien, Luke Rona and
Tom Wyrwich have accepted federal appellate clerkships (four with
judges on the Ninth Circuit and one with a judge on the Tenth Circuit). These appointments
will begin after graduation.
