Health Law LL.M. Curriculum

Curriculum Requirements

Our program is built on the foundation of the Center’s curriculum and programs and our longstanding multidisciplinary collaborations. The LL.M. degree will require the completion of forty quarter hours of course credit.* Full-time students can typically complete the course of study within one nine-month academic year.

OR
    • By enrolling in a 1-2 credit independent study (LAW 600) to extend a paper written in a previously completed health law-related course. Examples of courses are Global Health Law, International Research Ethics, Law & Policy, Disability Law, and Beginning of Life.
  • The remaining 28 additional credits will be drawn from a list of approved elective courses in which at least 20 of these credits must be law school courses or cross-listed courses with the law school. Using their elective course capacity, LL.M. students will have the capacity to focus their studies on the following tracks: Students seeking to focus their LL.M. curriculum in one of these areas will be required to take a minimum of 15 credits in their chosen focus.
  • Law H528 Health Law Practicum. Students may also earn 1-6 course credits through a health law practicum, which allows students to engage in experiential learning in real-life legal settings and also provides them access to potential employers and networking opportunities.

*The New York State Board of Law Examiners has recently increased the course requirements for international students wishing to the take the New York State Bar exam. The Washington State Supreme Court is currently considering permitting international law graduates to take the Washington Bar exam. International students interested in taking a state bar examination should anticipate taking at least 45 quarter hours of course credit to complete the LL.M. degree.
