Judicial Externships

Externships are available with many state and federal judges during the summer and throughout the school-year, in the greater-Seattle area and around the country. Making a decision to apply and determining to which judges one should apply calls for planning and strategy. Students who are considering a judicial externship are encouraged to meet with their professional development coaches soon to discuss their plans and to have their application material reviewed.

Many judges select externs on a rolling basis, and positions may be filled several quarters ahead, so students should begin the application process early.

Court-specific application instructions and availability of externship positions are available for Seattle-area courts listed at the bottom of this page. These charts are updated as information becomes available. Students interested in other courts should contact those courts for their application procedures.

APPLICATION INFORMATION: Unless otherwise noted, an application consists of the following:

  • Cover letter
  • Resume
  • Unofficial law school transcript
  • Writing sample
  • List of references and/or letters of recommendation

Generally, students should apply directly to the courts. For judges who request applications to be submitted through the Externship Program, instructions will be announced by email and posted here.
