Dean Gonzalez earned a joint degree, J.D./M.P.A., from U.C. Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law and Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government in 1994. She worked in the private and public sectors, practicing in the following areas: employment civil rights law, general tort law, complex litigation and disability law.
She served as a trial attorney for the EEOC's Seattle office and as a staff attorney for U.S. Magistrate Judge Monica J. Benton in the Western District of Washington.
Dean Gonzalez has also taught civil rights courses as a part-time lecturer at the University of Washington School of Law and Seattle University School of Law.
