Technology Info for Visitors

This page provides information about the technology resources available to UW Law School visitors and details important policies that should be considered prior to their arrival on campus. Questions or concerns about this information should be directed to Law School Technology Services (Lawhelp) via the contact information provided below.

Use of Law School Technology Equipment

Classroom Computers

Law School classroom computers are publicly accessible, shared computers.

To protect your UW NetID account, your personal data, and our computers:

  • Log out before leaving
  • Do not shut down the computer for any reason.

At the podium in each classroom there is a desktop computer available that offers full internet access. Each system has a CD/DVD drive as well as easily accessible USB ports making it easy to load your files or presentation materials.

In order to log on to the Law School classroom computers you must have a valid UW NetID. Non-UW visitors to the Law School should talk to their Law School contact if they do not yet have a UW NetID.

We recommend that, whenever possible, the classroom desktop computer be used for presentations. The classroom computers are part of the managed, secure Law School computing environment and are easier for support staff to troubleshoot in the event of a technical problem.

If you will be using a classroom computer during your visit and need software other than that listed below, please contact Lawhelp at least two weeks prior to your visit. This advance notice is required for Technology Services to be able to appropriately accomodate your request.

Standard Classroom Computer Software

  • Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 3
  • Presentation/Productivity: Microsoft Office 2010 (includes PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Access),Adobe Acrobat Reader, TurningPoint 2008
  • Web Browsers & Extensions: Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 3.5, Java, Flash, Silverlight
  • Multimedia: Apple iTunes/Quicktime, Windows Media Player, RealPlayer
  • Security: Sophos Anti-Virus, Faronics Deep Freeze

Multimedia/AV Equipment

A detailed list of the multimedia and AV equipment available in Law School classrooms is available under the "Classrooms and Technology" section at:

Use of Non-Law School Technology Equipment

Visitors to the Law School may opt to use their personal laptop computers for presentations or other uses of available classroom technology. Assistance with setting up a laptop to work with the room projection system is available on request.

Internet Access

Internet access for personal devices is available through the University's wireless network which is available in all classrooms. The network supports hardware rated for the 802.11a, b, and g standards. Please be sure your system is equipped with properly functioning, compatible hardware before your arrival as Technology Services is unable to provide wireless network adapters for personal computers.

Full access to the wireless network requires the use of a valid UW NetID. Non-UW visitors to the Law School should talk to their Law School contact if they do not yet have a UW NetID.

Network Security

You must fully update your computer with all available security patches, as well as protect your system with up-to-date antivirus sofware before using the University's wireless network.

It is not uncommon for an unpatched system on the UW network to be compromised within minutes. The UW Network Operations Center will revoke the network access of any system that impacts the stability and health of the university network, underscoring the need to properly secure your system ahead of time.
