Writing Competitions

Melissa S. Landers 1L Writing Competition

The Melissa S. Landers 1L Writing Competition is typically held during the two weeks following final exams in June. The Competition is a closed-universe writing assignment - WLR, the Pacific Rim Law & Policy Journal, and the Shidler Journal of Law Commerce and Technology provide all the cases, statutes, and commentaries, and no outside research is permitted. Students must take a position and support it persuasively using only the materials provided. The page limit is typically 10 double-spaced pages.

2L Writing Competition

The 2L Writing Competition takes place in Winter Quarter, and typically two second-year students are invited to join WLR in Spring Quarter. Students are invited to submit papers written for seminars or the analytic writing requirement.

More information will be posted here as it becomes available.

First-year law students or second-year transfer students may direct questions about membership to the Associate Editors-in-Chief at wlr@u.washington.edu.
