Exam4
General Information
Exam4 from Extegrity is the exam administration software used by the University of
Washington School of Law. Exam4 acts as an "armored word processor" for students to write exam
answers in, with security settings customizable depending on instructor preference (see information
on "Modes" below). In addition to locking down computers during exam taking, Exam4 also allows
students to submit exam answers electronically at the conclusion of the exam.
A video podcast of an Exam4 "Walkthrough" presented by the Registrar is linked above.
This should familiarize you with Exam4 - downloading and installing, using, and submitting electronically.
Downloading and Installing the Software
Each quarter, you must download the current version of the Exam4 software before
you take your exams; previous versions will not work, and additional time will not be given
for downloading during exam administration. Go to http://www.exam4.com,
choose “for Law Schools,” and follow the steps to download the program. Saving the Exam4
file to an easy-to-find location on your computer is recommended.
Using the Software
Everyone is strongly urged to do at least one CLOSED Mode "Practice Exam"
in Exam4 after installing a new version in order to become comfortable with using the software.
See the "FAQ & User Guide" provided on the Exam4 site for helpful information on using the software.
Also see the "Walkthrough" presented by the Registrar, linked above.
Modes
When using Exam4, you must select a “mode” for each exam you take. The
mode you select for your exam will be displayed on the exam answer received by
the professor, so make sure you pick in accordance with instructions.
Selecting the wrong “mode” may constitute a violation of the honor code.
CLOSED: Only Exam4 will run during your exam. All
other programs and files will be blocked, including internet access, until you
“end” your exam. This is the mode for almost all Exam4 exams.
OPEN: Exam4 will run, but will not cut off access to
other programs and files on your computer. You cannot cut/copy and paste into
Exam4 in this mode. Internet access is still blocked in this mode. You would
only choose this mode if the instructor explicitly instructs you that access to
files on your computer is permitted.
OPEN+NETWORK: This is the same as OPEN, except that
internet access remains open. You would only choose this mode if your instructor
explicitly instructs you that access to the internet is permitted. To engage
this mode, enter “NETWORK” in the additional blank box that appears when you enter
“OPEN” in the Exam Mode box.
Document Statistics - Word/Line/Character Counts
Exam4 has a number of running counts available. To see “document
statistics” in Exam4, choose “Show Document Statistics” from the “Tools” menu or
click the “Show/Hide Doc Stats” button on the right-hand side of the exam
interface. This will display four counts, left to right, in a box on the
right-hand side of the interface (you may have to scroll to see them all):
Words, Lines, Chars, Chars (WS). Important: “Chars (WS)” is short for
“characters with spaces”.
Submitting Electronically
At the conclusion of an Exam4 session, you will select "End Exam" and the "Submit Electronically" from
the options. Important: Electronic Submission is only possible while on the law school network. You
cannot submit electronically from home.
Technical Questions and Concerns
Submit any technical questions directly to Exam4, through the “User/Tech Support” form on the
Exam4 website.
IMPORTANT: IF YOU HAVE TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES WITH EXAM4 DURING AN EXAM, YOU WILL
NOT NEED TO SWITCH TO HANDWRITING IN BLUE BOOKS IF YOU ARE ABLE TO RE-ENTER YOUR EXISTING
EXAM4 SESSION OR START A NEW SESSION (INCLUDING AFTER RESTARTING YOUR COMPUTER).
