Class Recordings
Course recordings are offered either as a standard podcast of each class meeting for a course or on an ad-hoc basis requested by instructors or students. The form and availability of recordings is at the discretion of the course instructor. Recording requests cannot be guaranteed to be fulfilled. Requests that are received 24 hours or more prior to the start of class will have a greater chance of being accommodated.
Course Podcasts
Course recordings being offered as podcasts can be accessed through the iTunes software available from
Apple. The location of the podcast feed is available from your instructor. When you subscribe to the
podcast you will be prompted for your UWNetID and password to ensure that only students registered to the
course may view the podcast. Detailed instructions on subscribing to a podcast are available in
Adobe PDF form at http://www.law.washington.edu/students/PodcastInstructions.pdf.
Ad-hoc Recording Requests Q & A
I am going to miss class and am hoping to have it recorded. Who do I ask?
If you know ahead of time that you will miss class (e.g. you are taking a trip or have a planned doctor's
appointment), contact the instructor and ask him/her if he/she willing to tape the class; be sure to provide
the instructor a blank tape. All of the instructors have been given an opportunity to learn how to operate
the recording equipment themselves. Some instructors may feel more comfortable doing this or be more
willing to have the class recorded than others. (Most classrooms, but not all, have the equipment
for either video taping or audio taping.)
If you will need to miss a class due to an unexpected situation (e.g. illness, birth of a child) and cannot
contact your instructor, request the recording via the online form
and either send a message (or forward your request confirmation email) to your professor. A limited amount of "emergency" taping
of classes can be arranged. It will depend on
availability of staff and workload for that day.
I've requested that my class be recorded; can I be assured that it will be recorded?
Both the instructor, who may agree to tape a class for you, as well as Media Services, will do what can be
done. There is the possibility of equipment problems or too many requests to handle in a particular class
period. Also, an instructor may decline to have a particular class recorded due to the material to be
covered in the class that day.
Do I need to provide a videotape or cassette tape?
No. If you are making a
recording request via the web form, a digital recording is your only option.
The class I missed has been recorded. Where do I pick the tape up?
If the instructor is recording the class for you, please check with her/him on where to get the tape. It may
be with her/his secretary.
If your request was sent into Lawhelp, you will be emailed the location of the website where your digital
recording is located. You will need the latest version of either iTunes or Quicktime to view the file.
Will all instructors allow their classes to be recorded upon request?
No, some instructors may not allow their classes to be recorded on certain days or at all.
What are some alternatives if my class can not/will not be videotaped?
Students may contact a classmate and ask them either to forward their notes for that day or record the
class on a cassette tape recorder (Media Services will have these available at Academic Services, room
361). The classmate should still check with the instructor for permission to record.
