The first speaker for the Gates Public Service Law Program Speaker Series this year was US Attorney for the Western District of Washington, John McKay. John McKay is a long time public servant who has demonstrated the values of public service in a number of different ways. At his talk on October 23, 2006, he told stories of his pro bono cases as a private lawyer and the impact this work had on him and his clients. He alerted the audience to the crisis in funding for and delivery of civil legal aid and talked of ways he helped address these problems in his role as president of the Legal Services Corporation in the 90s. Finally he gave an understanding of the role of a US attorney and shared some of his goals for his office in the coming years. Most importantly he gave counsel on the ways in which law students can seek to fulfill their obligations of public service regardless of the type of work they choose. The Gates PSL Program is grateful to John McKay for an inspiring speech.
