“It is really meaningful to be able to stand with someone during what is likely the worst period in their life and help them get through it as unscathed as possible. It was an experience to see which clients were appreciative and grateful and which clients seemed ungrateful, even after the attorneys worked so many hours to get them the best possible outcome…There were certainly huge gaps in treatment of the wealthy compared to treatment of the poor that were painfully apparent in court, but it was incredibly reaffirming to see all the smart and talented people at the public defenders’ office working for systemic change in the criminal justice system on a number of different fronts. And it was refreshing to see how hard the attorneys worked for their clients, no matter how hopeless it seemed at times.”
