  • Erin M. Pettigrew ’12, Fellow at Initiative for Public Interest Law at Yale Erin M. Pettigrew, ’12, has accepted a fellowship with the Initiative for Public Interest Law at Yale. The Initiative funds innovative, pioneering projects that serve underrepresented communities, providing financial support for one year. (5/14/12)

  • UW team wins at the University of San Diego’s Thorsnes Vis Commercial Arbitration Pre-Moot UW law 2Ls Brie Coyle and Andy Murphy and UW law 3L Erin Pettigrew competed in the Thorsnes Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot at the University of San Diego, Feb. 18-19. The team made it into the finals, with Coyle and Murphy taking first place in the competition, as well as 2 of the 3 speaker awards. (3/1/12)

  • UW Law team wins Western Regional Transactional Law Meet UW law 3Ls Julia Conway and Matthew Viers earned first place overall and "best draft" awards at the 2012 Western Regional Transactional LawMeet at UCLA School of Law, February 17. The awards were based on the UW team's representation of a hypothetical client in negotiations against teams representing the counterparty. (2/24/12)
  • 3L Jeff Barnum's article cited by U.S. Court of Appeals Tenth Circuit In United States v. Strandlof, the Tenth Circuit upheld the Stolen Valor Act, which criminalizes lying about receiving a military award. The article written by Jeff Barnum  '12  in the December 2011 issue of the Washington Law Review was cited in the decision. (2/2/12)

  • Reyna Rollolazo ‘14 received the LERA and Samuel B. Bassett Scholarships After graduating UW in Law, Societies & Justice with a minor in Diversity, Rollolazo has continued her family's legacy of advocating for social justice by interning with the EEOC, the criminal justice reform group Justice Works!, and the Japanese American Citizen’s League.   • Students from Ethiopia studying Law at the UW - Ethiopian Community Mutual Association Five students from Ethiopia are studying for master of laws degrees at the UW School of Law. Richard Wentzell '08, is dean of the Haramaya College in Ethiopia. He and Professor Jon Eddy helped arrange full-tuition scholarships for the students. (12/12/11)

  • Tribal Court Public Defense Clinic visits Navajo Nation Professor Molly Cohan led a team of students from the Tribal Court Public Defense Clinic along with Afghan Visiting Scholars to the Navajo Nation to learn about Navajo efforts to create a justice system which supports the core cultural values of the Navajo people while operating effectively in the modern era. They observed the Navajo Supreme Court, met with the Navajo Peacemakers Program and ended the trip with a two day immersion in Canyon de Chelly. (6/1/11)

  • Judge John C. Coughenour Best Oral Advocate Award Presented to Jason Sykes '11 Jason Sykes, class of 11, won the Best Oral Advocate Ward at the mock trial competition presided over by Judge John C. Coughenour  on May 12, 2011. This award was created in 2007 by family, friends, former law clerks and colleagues of Judge Coughenour to honor his move to senior status on the U.S. District Court and to celebrate his twenty-five years of service on the federal bench. This annual award honors Judge Coughenour’s dedication to improving the quality of trial practice, his commitment to trial lawyering and his many years teaching trial advocacy at the UW School of Law.   • UW Law School provides remote-learning room for students with children in tow - Seattle Times Dozens of student-parents brought their children to class recently  to draw attention to the lack of child care near the Seattle campus. The School of Law's remote-learning room--which allows students to watch videos of law-school lectures while their children play in the room--is praised. (5/11/11)
  • Addressing status of long alien workers key to stabilizing CNMI workforce - Pacific News Center An independent analysis of the federalization law published in the Pacific Rim Law & Policy Journal described the CNMI situation "a lesser-known immigration crisis" that could be resolved if U.S. Congress passed legislation granting permanent resident status to long-term guest workers on the islands. 3 L Robert J.   • Two UW School of Law students win Bonderman Travel Fellowships 3L Sarra Yamin and 1L Joanna Sylwester were recently awarded the prestigious fellowships that offer graduate students and undergraduate students in the University Honors Program and in UW Tacoma's Global Honors Program an opportunity to engage in independent exploration and travel abroad.   • UW Law Students Push Bill to Protect Juvenile Records At the behest of a group of UW law students, Rep. Jeannie Darneille successfully pushed a bill this session to alter the rules governing juvenile records. The bill prohibits consumer reporting agencies from releasing juvenile records to employers, landlords, and other third parties after the person turns 21. (4/27/11)
  • UW reaches the Quarterfinals in the Willem C. Vis International Moot Court Competition The UW School of Law team competing in the Hong Kong competition finished in the top 8 out of 85 teams. The team consists of 3Ls Aubri Goldsby and Connor Shively, and 2Ls Erin Pettigrew and David Rubenstein. Shively and Rubenstein also received Honorable Mention Awards for Best Oralist.  (4/18/11)

  • The Fightin' 3Ls of the Judgment Day Intramural Basketball Team win championship After wrapping up an undefeated (5-0) regular season two weeks ago, they stormed through the playoffs and bested arch rivals from the Dental School 56-44 in the championship game. This is Judgment Day's second consecutive basketball championship.   • UW students explore far-reaches of the globe by means of unusual fellowship Third-year law student Alena Suazo has been selected as a 2010 Bonderman Travel Fellow to contemplate how colonization and oppression shape a culture. Bonderman Fellows are awarded $20,000 to travel for eight months, to at least six countries in at least two regions of the world to learn, explore and grow. (6/3/10)
