LTA Welcomes Executive Director Scott David
Scott David, formerly a K&L Gates partner whose primary practice is in technology
transactions and data protection, has joined UW Law as the Executive Director of
the Law, Technology & Arts Group, effective June 1. Adding Scott to our team
allows LTA to undertake new initiatives, form new partnerships, and build on the
many current successful LTA programs to advance UW Law as a national and global
leader at the intersection of law, technology and arts.
Scott’s involvement in the law, technology, and arts arena is impressive and
we are excited to welcome him to lead LTA to the next level. He has been active
in the World Economic Forum (Davos), Identity Commons, ABA Cyberspace Committee,
and Dorkbot (technology/arts organization) among other activities. He has also served
as an external board member of the Law, Technology and Arts Journal since 2008.
His leadership at K&L Gates included chairing the Professional Development Committee,
the Retention and Recruitment Task Force, and the Compensation Committee.
Scott received his J.D. magna cum laude from Georgetown in 1985 and an LL.M. in
Taxation from New York University in 1990. Scott’s practice has focused on
intellectual property and technology counseling and transactions, and he has become
a leading expert in these areas nationally and internationally. Scott was a partner
at K&L Gates (formerly Preston, Gates & Ellis) since 1992. Prior to joining
K&L Gates, he was an associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York.

Winn Leads IP Workshops in China and India
In 2011, the Asian Law Center received a grant from Microsoft to support collaboration
between UW Law School faculty members interested in intellectual property issues
and our counterparts in India and China. This new program builds on the 50 year
history in the Asian Law Center of collaboration between UW Law School and law schools
throughout Asia. During the first year, three visiting scholars from Asia each spent
one month in Seattle: Professor Zhang Guangliang from Renmin University Law School
in Beijing, Professor Wang Qian from East China University of Politics and Law in
Shanghai and Professor Shamnad Basheer from West Bengal National University of Juridical
Sciences in Kolkata.
In November 2011, Professor Jane Winn and Professor Zhang Guangliang hosted the
first of a series of workshops focused on teaching IPR in Asia at Renmin University.
During the workshop, the relationship between learning theory and curriculum design
were discussed as well as the scope of issues covered in IPR courses in China. Authors
of innovative teaching materials currently in use in China demonstrated their use
to colleagues.
In March 2012, Professor Jane Winn, Professor Shamnad Basheer and Professor Srikrishna
Deva Rao from the National Law University-Delhi hosted the second workshop in the
series and the first in India. During the workshop, trends in IP legal education
in India were discussed. Presentations on innovative approaches to teaching IP in
the US were followed by breakout session discussions on how innovations in IP teaching
in India could be disseminated more broadly.

Intellectual Property Inn of Court Hosted at UW Faculty Club
Since its inception, the University of Washington and LTA have hosted the Seattle
Intellectual Property American Inn of Court at the University Club on the UW campus.
The IP Inn is a unique organization designed to foster professionalism, mentoring,
and education of intellectual property litigators. Based upon an English model of
mentoring, the membership of the Inn form groups called “pupilages”
that combine a range of experience from Students to “Barristers” and
“Masters.” The Inn meets one night a month at the Faculty Club for dinner
where one group is responsible for that night’s educational program. Past
programs have included interactive discussions with patent judges, mock Supreme
Court arguments, and game show contests. The Seattle chapter of the IP Inn is more
than 100 members strong and meets the third Thursday of the month. LTA Associate
Director Signe Naeve was a founding member of the Seattle IP Inn and LTA Faculty
Director Bob Gomulkiewicz was an inaugural member.

UW Students Argue Patent Infringement in Rome, Italy
Rome may be famous for its history and culture, but intellectual property took center
stage this past spring break when the University of Roma Tre hosted the sixth annual
Transnational IP Program, uniting students from six schools and 15 countries. The
students attend a series of comparative law lectures, but the highlight is always
the mock trial at the culmination of the program. This year, the students presented
contributory patent infringement arguments to Judge Muscolo of the IP Court in Rome,
Italy, Judge Sharon Prost from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit,
and Justice Klaus Grabinski of the Federal Supreme Court of Germany.
The Program is run by Professor Toshiko Takenaka and the Center for Advanced Study
and Research on Intellectual Property (CASRIP) as a part of the Law, Technology
& Arts (LTA) Group in collaboration with its European partner schools and adjunct
faculty. Many UW students who have attended the past programs developed strong bonds
with their mock trial team members expanding their global IP network.

UW Students Advance at Giles Rich Moot Court Competition
UW Law students Liz Hagan and Bryan Russell reached the quarter-finals of
the regional Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Moot Court Competition held in Palo
Alto, CA. The Giles Rich competition is organized by the American Intellectual Property
Law Association and is the most prestigious appellate advocacy competition with
an intellectual property focus. Finalists for the local competition were Marlena
Grundy-Dietzway and Janice Goh and semi-finalists were Ryan Baker and Tim Billick.
Samuel Webb and Yury Colton from Stoel Rives taught the IP Appellate Advocacy class
that prepared the students for the local competition, hosted the local competition,
and coached the regional competition team. The class and competition have been a
great experience for the students, and in particular, they would like to thank Sam
and Yury for their efforts.

LTA Associate Director Signe Naeve chaired the third annual Trademark Scholarship
Symposium at the 134th annual meeting of the International Trademark Association
(INTA) in Washington, D.C. The Symposium presents a workshop environment for authors
of trademark scholarship works-in-progress to receive valuable feedback from both
academics and practitioners. Naeve presented her own work at the first Trademark
Scholarship Symposium and then became a member of the Professor Committee and began
running the Scholarship Symposium.
Professor Toshiko Takenaka also attended INTA this year where she and Naeve hosted
a joint reception with LTA friends and colleagues from the George Washington University
Law School. The reception provided a wonderful opportunity to stay connected with
supporters and alums either visiting or permanently located in the D.C. area.
