Tom Whalen, the attorney who litigated Helicopteros de Colombia vs. Hall (Helicol) before the U.S. Supreme Court, will speak to students at the UW School of Law on March 5 in William H. Gates Hall Room 117. The Helicol case set a landmark precedent on the issue of the jurisdiction of US courts over non-US companies for claims based upon aircraft accidents outside the United States.
Whalen has extensive litigation experience in the courts of New York and the District of Columbia at both the trial and appellate level. He successfully defended airlines in litigation involving the Warsaw Convention and tried numerous cases in Washington in defense of Air America and Korean Air. In addition to the Helicol case, he argued Stencel Aero Engineering Corp v US before the U.S. Supreme Court. Whalen is an attorney in the Washington, DC office of Eckert Seamans.
