UW Afghan Legal Educators Program Receives State Department Grant

Seattle – The Afghan Legal Educators Program administered by the UW Asian Law Center will receive a $895,000 supplemental grant from the US Department of State to continue the support of Afghan law students and professors studying at the UW School of Law. The Afghan program was originally established with a $2 million grant from the US State Department to the UW in 2004 and supports the law school to provide post-graduate legal training to faculty members and curriculum development to train the Afghan legal community.

This most recent grant provides funding for conducting an in-country moot court training program and competition, leading to selection of an Afghan team to represent Afghanistan at the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition final competitions in Washington, DC in March 2010. Other funded activities includes providing clinical ("hands-on") and practical training for Afghan scholars, the implementation of clinical workshops and empirical research workshops in Afghanistan, and providing additional graduate degrees to program candidates.
