Five University of Washington law students were selected for externships with Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Washington, for the academic year 2004-2005. Supported by the Shidler Center for Law, Commerce & Technology, second-year student Selina Davis and first-year student Connie Feng Wan spent last summer in Washington, D.C. to assist Cantwell and her staff with Judiciary Committee matters including intellectual property rights, Internet security, personal privacy concerns, e-commerce regulation and telecommunications policy.

They were followed by second-year student John Amaya in autumn, and first-year students Nicole Kovite and Susan Llorens in the winter and spring quarters respectively.

“UW’s legal interns are important to the daily operations of my office – and they never back away from a challenge,” said Cantwell. “They come to Washington, D.C. primed with the knowledge and ambition that fuels a fast-paced Senate office, and they leave having completed a crash course in real legislative politics.”

The externship program was started by Sharon Nelson, the Shidler Center’s former director, in 2002, because she had benefited from a similar externship program sponsored by former Sen. Warren G. Magnuson.

“We are delighted to work with Sen. Cantwell’s office, and to be able to provide our students with a first-hand glimpse of the legislative process,” said Anita Ramasastry, Co-Director of the Shidler Center. “It is a great opportunity for our students to experience policy debates in the areas of technology and intellectual property – areas of vital concern to Washington State and its citizens.”

Darcy Burner and Jeremy Lazowska have been chosen as externs for the 2005-2006 Academic year.
