Technology Law & Policy Clinic

In 2003, the Shidler Center received a $100,000 grant from Amazon.com to establish a new technology law and public policy clinic at UW Law School. William Covington was hired to direct the clinic and teach the complementary course, commencing in September 2003.

Tech Law Roundtable

In 2004-2005, the Shidler Center launched the Tech Law Roundtable series, a new series of luncheon programs targeting the IP and tech law practice community in the Puget Sound area. These Roundtable programs provided an opportunity for discussion of selected cutting edge issues in a collegial, informal environment. Discussion leaders distributed background materials in advance of the meetings and started the ball rolling by highlighting the most challenging issues raised by recent decisions, proposed legislation or technological innovations.

Business Briefing Series

During the 2003-2004 academic year, the Shidler Center launched a pilot Law, Commerce & Technology Business Briefing series. The series was designed to provide members of the Puget Sound business community with timely, practical, non technical overviews of emerging business law and technology issues. The series was offered as a public service to businesses. Based on positive feedback, the Shidler Center hosted three more briefings for 2004-2005.

Five UW Law Students Selected for Externships with Sen. Cantwell

Five University of Washington law students were selected for externships with Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Washington, for the academic year 2004-2005. “UW’s legal interns are important to the daily operations of my office – and they never back away from a challenge,” said Cantwell. “They come to Washington, D.C. primed with the knowledge and ambition that fuels a fast-paced Senate office, and they leave having completed a crash course in real legislative politics.”
