IP Law LL.M. Admissions

The central criterion for admission will be the applicant's potential for successful completion of, and contribution to, the program. Important factors to be considered are:

  • overall academic record, particularly in law school
  • professional experience
  • demonstrated interest in intellectual property or technology law.

Eligibility

Degree Requirement

Applicants must hold a J.D. or an equivalent degree from a law school that is a member of the Association of American Law Schools and one approved by the American Bar Association.

Language Ability

Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency. The ways in which proficiency can be demonstrated are outlined in UW Graduate School English Language Proficiency Requirements .

Work Requirements

We generally require LL.M. candidates to have at least two years of professional work experience. This requirement may be waived in special circumstances specific to the applicant.

Application Instructions

  • Apply online to the University of Washington Graduate School.
  • Submit the following application materials to the IP Law and Policy LL.M. Program Admissions, University of Washington, School of Law, William H. Gates Hall, Box 353020, Seattle, WA 98195-3020:
    1. Copy of Graduate School application
    2. Official transcripts from undergraduate and graduate schools (international students) and J.D. degree (domestic students)
    3. One or more letter(s) of recommendation specifically commenting on the applicant's ability to do graduate work in intellectual property or technology law
    4. A statement of purpose indicating why you wish to pursue graduate study in intellectual property or technology business law
    5. Resume
    6. International Students: Copy of official TOEFL score

IP Law LL.M. Application Deadlines

International Applicants

Due to the time required for processing international applications, applicants must complete the online application and submit the required application materials to the program February 1.

Domestic Applicants

All applications materials must be sent to the program department no later than June 1. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis so it is suggested that application materials be sent earlier than June 1.

Notice/Acceptance

After you have been admitted to the program, you will receive an email and a letter of acceptance from the LTA Director for Academics. When you receive this notification, international applicants must then submit additional application materials to the Graduate School. This list of required materials can be found here. Domestic applicants who are admitted and accept our offer of admissions will be notified by the Graduate School on which undergraduate and/or graduate transcripts the applicant must submit.
