Professor Lombardi Spoke on Constiutional Design in Myanmar and Thailand
On February 4-9, Lombardi spoke at a series of workshops on constitutional design held in Yangon, Myanmar and Chiang Mai, Thailand
The February 4-5 workshop in Yangon was sponsored by the National Peace Center of Myanmar and Columbia University's Institute for the Study of Human Rights. Lombardi discussed constitutional power-sharing, devolution/center-periphery relations and comparative analysis of constitutions in transitional countries. My talk at Chiang Mai Thailand was sponsored by United Nationalities Federal Council of Burma and by Columbia University's Institute for the Study of Human Rights and covered the same subjects.

After months of fierce debate over the place of Islam in government, the assembly drafting a new constitution for Egypt has settled on a compromise that opens the door to more religion in governance but mainly guarantees that the issue will continue to roil politics, the Parliament and the courts for many years to come.
