The Disability Law Alliance at the University of Washington Law School (DLA) is an organization of students with and without disabilities working to raise awareness, foster dialogue, and support advocacy concerning disability law issues; to create an accessible and inclusive environment at the Law School; and to encourage and enhance career opportunities in the field of disability law.

What do we do?

This is DLA’s inaugural year, so we hope to lay the groundwork for a lasting organization with programming that will fulfill our mission.  Listed below are programs we would like to sponsor this year.  We welcome feedback and suggestions from all students about DLA programs and opportunities.

·        Fall quarter coffee talk: Students with disabilities and those students interested in disability law can meet and establish mentor relationships with students, attorneys with disabilities, or attorneys who work on disability issues.

·        Winter quarter career panel: Disability is a civil and human rights issue.  Come learn about the different career opportunities working in the discipline of disability law.

·        Disability studies and spring symposium: Help us plan programming that coordinates with related student organizations, the Disability Studies Program, and the upcoming symposium on disability and international human rights.

·        Advocacy efforts: DLA will provide support for and assistance to students who have been denied what they feel are reasonable accommodations for participating in classes, sitting for exams, and being a part of the UWLS community.

·        Hands on community service project: To be determined.  If you’ve got suggestions, please join us.

·        Diversity in the workplace: DLA will work with Outlaws and minority student organizations to present a panel on discussing diversity issues during the job search process.

Sounds like fun!  How can I help as a DLA member?

·        Join our listserv: we will periodically send out announcements and information about disability related jobs, issues, and programs at UW and in our community.

·        Be a leader: we’re looking for a 1L representative for our Board

·        Design our website: we want to provide up to date and accessible information about the DLA, news from the disability movement, and resources to the UWLS community

·        Bring your ideas and your passion to advocate: we want to offer an array of programs that both support students with disabilities and educate about disability law.

How do I ask for an accommodation?

Contact Disability Resources for Students (DRS) at uwdss@u.washington.edu (ph: 206-543-2894, TTY: 206-543-8925).  There is a two step process for requesting accommodations:

1.  Students must submit documentation of their disability or disabilities from a qualified treatment provider.

2.  A DRS Counselor or Director will then interview the student to determine the student’s specific needs and appropriate accommodations.

The suggested accommodations are then given to William Jackson in Academic Services.  Information about your disability will not be disclosed to the school for confidentiality reasons.

More information is available at http://www.washington.edu/students/drs/.

Tips for requesting an accommodation:

·        Contact DRS before submitting documentation of your disability.  DRS can tell you what kinds of records they need to help them identify your needs and reasonable accommodations.

·        Do not wait until the end of the quarter as this will not provide sufficient time for DRS to process your request.

·        If your request is denied but you believe it was a reasonable accommodation, contact DLA for resources to help you advocate for your needs.
