LAW E509 European Union Law
Credits: 2-4, Variable
The course will be a survey of the legal origins of the European Union and the synthesis of the major European legal traditions that has been achieved. It will focus primarily on the process of harmonizing national laws of the member states and economic integration in the area of competition law (anti-trust) and free movement of goods and services, with a view to understanding the legal identity of contemporary Europe.

The European Union constitution as ratified by the Lisbon Reform Treaty: history, values, and objectives; EU institutions and finances; economic, political, and constitutional competences; citizenship and democracy; fundamental rights and freedoms; common foreign policy; security and defense; amending the EU constitution. Interdisciplinary graduate and advanced undergraduate students welcome. No prerequisites.
