Courses 2010 - 2011
LAW E514 The Law Of Nonprofit Organizations
Credits: 2-4, Variable
This course will examine laws generally applicable to nonprofit corporations. If time permits, the course will also address legal issues relating to other types of nonprofits such as cooperatives, credit unions, and thrift/mutual associations. We will compare and contrast the Washington Nonprofit Corporation Act with other comparable statutes and model legislation. An overarching theme will be whether nonprofits are economically beneficial or publicly desirable institutions that deserve a special legal status. Additionally, the course will contrast, wherever possible, regulation of nonprofit corporations with regulation of for-profit companies. The course will compare the relative economic efficiencies of nonprofit versus proprietary organizations, especially in the health care and environmental sectors.
