LAW B567 General Externship Perspectives Seminar

Credits: 2

General Externship Perspectives is a seminar for those students taking 6 or more externship credits. This "speaker driven" series of weekly meetings has the following goals: 1) exposing participants to some of the skills necessary to succeed as a lawyer: 2) providing an opportunity to discuss topical issues of importance about the law and the legal system; and 3) giving students a forum in which to share their externship experiences. Those taking the seminar normally extern as judicial law clerks, public prosecutors or defenders, staff for government agencies or for non-governmental advocacy organizations. The speakers who will appear before the class are drawn from each of these particular backgrounds. Among the speakers are: judges; senior law clerks; prosecuting attorneys; public defenders; staff attorneys from state and federal governmental agencies and lawyers working for private advocacy organizations. Students are expected to: read relevant statutes and cases; examine periodicals and web sites; write short, reflective papers; journal about their externship experiences and communicate regularly with their field and faculty supervisors. A modified version of this seminar is provided online for those working outside the greater Seattle area. This course will satisfy the externship seminar requirement when taken during the same quarter as the externship. Offered on a credit/no credit basis only.
