This seminar explores the historical origins of the guarantees of individual rights contained in the original US. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and subsequent constitutional amendments. The seminar considers the origins, from the era of Magna Carta, of the principle of constitution limitations on government action, and will assess the wisdom and feasibility of basing current interpretations of constitutional rights on the intent of the framers. A previous upper-level course in Constitutional Law is recommended for participants. All students in the seminar must complete a paper. (Not offered 2009-2010 academic year.)
