Law B539 Public Interest Law Externship

Offered: [Autumn] [Winter] [Spring]
Credits: Section A: 1-5, Maximum of 5 Credits Section B: 6-15, Maximum of 15 Credits

Students performs civil legal work for an approved nonprofit organization, including a legal aid office, public interest organization or pro bono attorney, in compliance with the rules set forth in the Public Service Externship Guidelines. Students enrolled in Section B must participate in either B567 General Externship Perspectives Seminar or E507 Access to Justice Seminar. Should student be unable to participate in the seminar due to exceptional circumstances, student may take, with the written permission of the Associate Dean, the Externship Tutorial or an alternative course related to the externship. The seminar (or other approved course) must be taken during the same quarter as the externship. One academic credit will be awarded for every 30 hours of work up to a maximum of 5 credits for Section A and 15 credits for Section B. The decision to award credit will be made by the supervising faculty member in consultation with the Public Service Program Director. The externship will be graded on a credit/no credit basis.
