Pharos Wireless Printing Frequently Asked Questions

Uninstalling the Pharos Software

Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7

Open the 'Add or Remove Programs' Control Panel in Windows 2000/XP or the 'Programs and Features' Control Panel in Windows Vista/7. Scroll down the list until you see an item named 'Pharos' and uninstall it.

IMPORTANT
If you installed a previous version of the Law School Pharos software, you may see two items in the list: one will be called 'Pharos' and the other will be called 'Pharos Printers for US School of Law Uninstall'. In this case, you should be sure to use the 'Pharos Printers for US School of Law Uninstall' item.

Mac OS X

There is currently no comprehensive uninstall program for the Mac OS. On these systems you should first remove the printer from Printers & Faxes and then uninstall the Popup software.

To uninstall the Popup software first launch the Uninstaller application in /Library/Application Support/Pharos/Utilities. Select 'Pharos Popup' then click 'Continue'. A list of the selected items will be shown. Click 'Continue'. Type in an administrator user name and password if required to do so. The selected components will be removed from the client machine. Click 'Done'.

Other Questions

  1. Where can I pick up my print jobs?

There are two locations you can pick up your print jobs in W. H. Gates Hall: the Law School Computer Lab in room 222 and in the Gallagher Law Library first floow copy alcove - room L114. Don't forget your Husky card to pay for them!

  2. Is there a version of Pharos print software that works with Windows Vista/7?

Yes. The Law School provided Pharos installer is completely Vista compatible. It is also minimally supported under Windows 7.

  3. Is there a version of Pharos print software that works with 64-bit versions of Windows?

Not currently, no. However, you can use the installation procedure described here to manually install Pharos support.

  4. Do you support printing on Apple computers?

Yes, if the computer is running Mac OS X version 10.4 (Tiger) or OS X 10.5 (Leopard). For these systems an installation procedure is available on the main wireless printing page.

Pharos is not supported on OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) or 10.3 (Panther).

Pharos support for OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) is provided by Dawg-Prints.

  5. Can I print my documents in a duplex (double-sided) format?

Yes - the Pharos printers support duplex (double-sided) printing by default. You can select this for a print job through the printer's properties. If duplex mode does not show up as an option through printer properties it may need to be configured for the printer. This should happen automatically during Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 installations and is covered in the Mac OS X setup instructions. If the duplex option doesn't appear, please contact LawHelp for assistance in correcting this problem.

  6. My firewall/security software appears to be blocking the Pharos software from connecting to the network. What do I need to do to fix this?

The Pharos software needs to be able to open outgoing network connections on TCP ports 515 and 28203. Alternatively, you can choose to allow all connections from the program "<system drive>\Program Files\Pharos\bin\popupcli.exe". You may also contact LawHelp for assistance in correcting this problem.

  7. I don't get a Pharos popup window asking for my user ID and job name when I print to the Pharos printers. Why not?

For Windows Vista/7 users, this may mean the software was installed incorrectly. Please remove the current software using the procedure at the top of this page and then download the software again. Be sure to save the installer to your desktop and then right-click on the saved file and select "Run as administrator". If this doesn't help, or you aren't using Windows Vista/7, then your system in configured incorrectly in some other way. Please contact LawHelp at LawHelp for assistance in correcting this problem.

  8. I have a local printer I use elsewhere, and I do get a Pharos popup window when I try to print to it. Why?

If this is occurring it means that your system is somehow configured incorrectly. Please contact LawHelp for assistance in correcting this problem.

  9. My print jobs are being successfully sent to the Pharos printers, but when I pick them up they're garbled and unintelligible. Why?

The print driver being used is most likely incorrect (it should be for a Xerox Phaser 5550 printer). For assistance in correcting this problem, please contact LawHelp.

  10. During the installation on a Windows machine, the software told me it must perform an upgrade and that it can't run in unattended mode – what does this mean and what do I do about it?

This most likely means that you had a previous version of the Popup software installed on your system and the new installation needs to run as an upgrade. In the dialog boxes that appear, continue to click on either 'OK' or 'Next' until you get a window with a 'Start' button and then click that. The installation process will then proceed, but may not result in a usable configuration. If you have trouble printing after the installation is complete, you will need to remove the software (see the removal instructions at the top of this page), restart your computer and run the installation again.

  11. During the installation on a Windows machine, I was told that the printer driver was not digitally signed and/or had not passed Microsoft's compatibility tests. Do I need to worry about this?

You do not need to worry about this. This should not occur on most systems, but could happen if the printer installation is attempting to make use of a file already present on your system. Use of the Pharos printers should not be affected.

  12. I've gone through all the questions, and didn't see anything about my problem – now what?

Please contact LawHelp for further assistance.
