Information for Clients

In mediation, you take control of the problem and the solution. You decide whether to participate, whether and how to resolve the dispute, and when to leave. If you and the other party reach a settlement, your agreement can be written as a contract.   When both parties are willing to be flexible and share openly, they are usually able to reach a mutually acceptable resolution.

The mediators are second and third year law students who have completed an extensive mediation training through the Continuing Legal Education Program at the University of Washington School of Law, followed by an additional instruction and practice. They are supervised by a faculty member or professional mediator in all mediations they conduct.

Typical Mediation Cases include:

  • Buyer/Seller
  • Consumer/Business
  • Co-workers
  • Employer/Employee
  • Housemates/Roommates
  • Landlord/Tenant
  • Neighbors
  • Student/Staff

The Mediation Clinic accepts cases from early October through May each year. Please note that we do not handle dissolution or child custody disputes. See our Mediation Client Brochure for more detailed information. Cases can usually be scheduled within one or two weeks.

To contact the clinic case developers call 206-685-4140 or email . This service is offered free of charge as part of the public service program at the School of Law.
