UW Environmental Law Clinic & Washington's Stock Water Exemption: Industrial Farms Could Leave Eastern Washington With Dry Wells

Mt.St.HelensFor several years the UW Environmental Law Clinic, working with Clinic client the Center for Environmental Law & Policy, has been conducting research relating to Washington State’s stock water exemption. According to a 2005 Attorney General Opinion, the stock water exemption allows for unlimited and largely unregulated use of water for stock watering, including water for factory farms. On April 9, the New York Times published an article addressing the issue and impacts on the lives of family farmers in rural eastern Washington, including Clinic client Five Corner Family Farmers.
