CASRIP Activities Summer 2007
CASRIP, the IP Law & Policy LL.M. and Asian Law LL.M. programs hosted a seminar on Mergers and Acquisitions under revised Japanese corporation law and tax law on July 2. The seminar was held at Waseda Law School. The seminar began with a DVD including welcoming remarks from University of Washington School of Law Dean Greg Hicks. After Professor Uemura, a renowned corporate governance expert and the Dean of the legal faculty at Waseda University, presented his view on the changes introduced in a 2007 revision of Japanese corporation law, Mr. Hirakawa who is an Asian Law graduate, moderated a panel discussion. Except for one speaker from the cabinet secretaries, all of the panelists were UW law school alumni and a CASRIP advisory member. Mr. Jody Chafee, a UW law school alum and a part-time lecturer for the Asian Law Center also participated in the panel discussion to share his insights from working as in-house counsel for Starbuck’s coffee.
The seminar was attended by 100 people including both UW alumni and prospective students who are planning to study in the United States. A reception was held after the seminar to host the speakers and alumni. CASRIP graduates enjoyed the opportunity to network with IP LL.M. and Asian Law alumni and to receive updates on developments at the UW law school.

Toshiko Takenaka is on leave during Spring quarter and teaches US and European IP laws at Waseda law school. In April, she was invited by Korean Institute of Intellectual Property and presented a paper comparing U.S. and Japanese intellectual property policies. Her paper comparing patent claim interpretation under Japanese, US, European and Korean patent laws was published in a book celebrating the 30th anniversary of Korean Industrial Property Office.
