Professor Toshiko Takenaka will lead an IP Policy Seminar in New Delhi, Friday, December 14, 2012, 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM. Co-Hosted by University of Washington School of Law and Indian Society of International Law.

March 25-28, 2013

CASRIP and University of London Queen Mary School of Law will sponsor a Transnational IP program.  This 4-day program includes comparative law classes taught by American and European professors on various areas of intellectual property. This year will highlight IP areas such as IP protection for computer software, third party liability and fair use. Students will also have the opportunity to work with their European colleagues in a license negotiation exercise and a mock trial presented before five leading  patent American and European judges.

IP and National Innovation Strategies in Asia-Pacific Conference will be co-sponsored by CASRIP and the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). Scholars from Germany, Japan, Korea and China, representatives of the AIPLA, the University of Washington, Berkeley Center for Law & Technology, the Stanford Law School will speak on IP and National Strategies, Legal Issues Around Cloud Computing, and Design and Trade Dress Protection: IP Protection of Human Interface.

The Future of Green Technology: Policy Consideration for Obama's Second Term. Scholars from China, Canada, Germany and the United States will discuss the energy strategies in China, Canada, and their impacts on the United States; and the role of patent law in promoting green technology.

CASRIP-SPCC China  Judicial Conference & Open to Public Conference. Professor Toshiko Takenaka, Professor Dongsheng Zang, leading IP judges of China and Europe will be speaking on  Direct and Indirect Patent and Copyright Infringement, IP Exhaustion, Licensing and Enforcement.

CASRIP, Asian Law Center and East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPSL) will host a conference addressing challenges in determining extent of patent and copyright protection in the information age. The conference will be held at ECUPSL’s Changning Campus. Speakers include leading IP experts from China, US, and EU including Judge Robart from US District Court, Western District of Washington. Topics include patent scope during the examination, licensing transactions and litigation as well as patent and copyright exhaustion. Speakers review decisions from the court of highest authority in U.S. and Europe from the comparative law perspective.

July 17-August 2, 2013

CASRIP hosted its 19th Summer Institute. More than 100 participants representing 10 countries attended the two and a half week program focusing on technology protection. Participants included judges from the Supreme People's Court of China, regional High Courts of China, and the IP High Court of Japan as well as patent examiners from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.

CASRIP hosted its annual High Technology Protection Summit Conference. Speakers included Judge Sharon Prost from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Prof. Dr. Jorechim Bornkamm from the Federal Court of Justice of Germany, Judge James Robert from the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, and Judge Toshiaki Iimura, President of the IP High Court of Japan.

Chinese, Taiwanese, and Japanese Judges visited the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and exchanged views on patent and global health with IP counsel from the local non-profit organization.

As part of the CASRIP Summer Institute, six Chinese judges, two Japanese judges/one former Japanese judge, a Taiwan judge together with CASRIP Associate and Assistant Directors and TAs visited Judge James Robart's courtroom and attended the Microsoft v. Motorola hearing.

September 2013

Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has appointed Professor Toshiko Takenaka, Director of CASRIP and Washington Research Foundation-W. Hunter Simpson Professor of Technology Law, to the Intellectual Property Committee which is part of METI's Industrial Structural Council (Shingikai). Professor Toshiko Takenaka, Washington Research Foundation/W. Hunter Simpson Professor of Technology Law, Director, CASRIP, and Mrs. Anna Bakhmetyeva, Law, Technology & Arts Group, University of Washington School of Law presented a series of presentations on U.S. IP Law in Moscow and Saint-Petersburg, Russia, in September 2013. On behalf of the University of Washington School of Law and CASRIP, Prof. Takenaka signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Collaboration Agreement with our new partner school Russian State Academy of Intellectual Property. We plan to have a team of Russian IP students and professors at the Transnational IP Institute 2014 in Dresden and 2014 CASRIP Summer Institute. Mrs. Bakhmetyeva reached an agreement with a few leading Russian IP professors on the co-authorship and publications of two articles on Trade Secret law and Employee Inventions and Works from the comparative law perspective.

CASRIP will partner with Chulalongkorn University Law School and the National Science and Technology Development Agency to host a conference on IP Policy and Technology Transfer Practice in Bangkok, Thailand. The goal of the conference is to encourage the dialogue among experts from ASEAN countries, India, the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Korea on emerging IP issues. CASRIP and Tokyo Medical Dental University will co-host a conference on "Globalization of Medical Science Industry and Technology Transfer Strategies" on Wednesday, December 4, 17:30-19:35 and a reception thereafter 20:00-21:00 at the Tokyo Medical Dental University. University of Dresden will host the 2014 Transnational IP Seminar between March 24 to 28, 2014. We are very excited to have a very diverse group of students this year from UW, CEIPI, Dresden, Roma Tre, Queen Mary, Alicante, La Sapienza, Technische Universitat Munchen, Shandong University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Russian State Academy of IP and Charles University of Prague of about 50 students.

CASRIP will host the first Work-in-Progress Workshop for Junior IP scholars in Asia and Europe. Eleven rising IP Junior scholars will present their papers which focuses on patent, trademark or copyright in front of professors from IP research centers in Asia-Pacific regions, Europe and faculty members at UW School of Law.
