CASRIP Advisory Committee

Professor Takenaka

These are exciting times for the intellectual property law program at the UW School of Law. Recent years have seen an explosion in intellectual property practice throughout the world. To remain on the forefront of this rapidly changing field of law, CASRIP has assembled an impressive group of scholars and practitioners from around the world to serve on its Advisory Committee. The Committee’s Executive Council is composed of distinguished scholars and leading policy makers in intellectual property law from each of the major global markets. The Associate Members of the Committee all come from major U.S. and Japanese intellectual property firms and have experience with a wide variety of cutting edge technologies. These attorneys are the leading practitioners in the field and will help shape the future of intellectual property law around the world and in the U.S. This rare combination of talent ensures that the UW and CASRIP will remain on the leading edge of intellectual property law by receiving a constant stream of new and innovative ideas for its curriculum, clinics, and conferences.

The expertise of the Advisory Committee is expected to benefit other programs being developed at the University as well. The Law School is finalizing its choice for Director of the new Center for Law, Commerce, and Technology and expects that the Center will work closely with CASRIP in developing a curriculum focused on Internet law and e-commerce issues. On a larger scale, the University is nearing completion of the Technology Enterprise Institute. The Institute is a cross-disciplinary body that brings together the resources of the Law School, the Business School, and the various scientific disciplines to encourage the commercialization of technologies developed at the University. The Law School plans to be an integral part of the Institute by offering cutting edge courses, for both law students and non-law students. Proposed courses will address issues such as business planning, obtaining venture capital, securities regulation of start-up companies, legal protection of technology, and technology licensing. The practical and legal expertise of the Advisory Committee members will be invaluable in determining the future direction of these exciting projects.
