Bar Exam and Admissions

Applicants who intend to practice law should be aware that admission to the bar in all states involves character, fitness and other qualifications. Applicants are encouraged to determine what those requirements are in the state(s) in which they intend to practice by consulting the website of the National Conference of Bar Examiners at http://www.ncbex.org/.

WASHINGTON STATE BAR EXAM

The Washington State Bar Exam is offered twice a year, in February and in July.; Information regarding prerequisites, how to register for the exam, exam policies and exam fees can be found here: http://www.wsba.org/admissionsmain.htm Begin the application process early to allow sufficient time to complete all of the forms. The Uniform Bar Exam and Multi-state Professional Responsibility Exam will be used in place of the current bar exam in Washington beginning with the July 2013 exam. More information can be found at http://wsba.org/media/releases/ube0211.htm;

OTHER STATE BAR EXAMS

Information on the bar exam for each state can be found in the Directory of Admissions Offices, for the National Conference of Bar Examiners.

Students should check the application deadlines, some that begin as early as January of each year. Applications take time to complete so allow enough time to fill out forms and to be certified by Academic Services. There is generally a fee for taking the Bar Exam which can be found on state admissions offices websites.

BAR REVIEW COURSES

In addition, during the year, students have a choice to take a bar review course. Often Bar Review companies have their representatives provide information throughout the year at information tables. Representatives of Bar Review companies have tables set up near the coffee area on the first floor. There is a fee for bar review courses.

THE PATENT BAR EXAM

For students who want to practice IP law, we recommend becoming a member of the patent bar. Information on the patent bar exam requirements and instructions for registration can be found on the United State Patent and Trademark Office website. Exams are offered on an on-going basis, and there is a fee to take the exam.
