Lisa Kremer, Class of 2008
Hometown: Tacoma, WA
Education: BA Mills College, MA University of Missouri
Why I chose UWLS:
- A good school that provides support to nontraditional students
- Resources for law students who are parents
- A supportive student body
- A rigorous, yet non-competitive environment
My name is Lisa Kremer and I got my undergraduate degree from Mills College in Oakland, California and I got a degree in English and I also have a Master's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri at Columbia.
I chose the U, partly because it's a good school, it's well ranked, it's got a great reputation. And partly because I saw a lot of support for parents and for older students, particularly parents. There's a room here at the law school called the Remote Learning Room where parents can bring their children if they're sick or if they're nursing they can breast pump during the day. And I thought, you know, I might not even ever use that room but just the fact that it exists and that the school made the space for it and the professors support the use of it to me implied a great deal of support.
I think one of the greatest supports has actually been my fellow students because there are a lot of other parents and we're able to talk together and commiserate and share ideas on how to cope and how to adjust your schedule. And my classmates remember each other's issues. They will, you know, they'll check in with me and say, "So did your new study plan for the weekend work out?" and I'll ask them the same thing. And we'll practice different tactics in trying to get through the day. And, in addition, the professors are very supportive. If you need to watch a class from the Remote Learning Room they're understanding about it.
But I would tell somebody looking at law schools that this is a great place to be, that it's a rigorous environment, that people work very, very hard, that it's full of very smart people that are fun to be around. But at the same time it's not a competitive, cutthroat environment. People are very supportive of each other.
I've really enjoyed it and I'm going to miss when I'm gone I can already tell.
